The offices at the Nippon Foundation Paralympic Support Centre in Tokyo features strong elements amidst versatile open spaces.
Established to create a strong foundation for the Paralympic sports associations, the Nippon Foundation Paralympic Support Centre will serve as a support centre and communication hub for the Paralympic Movement leading up to the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games. Torafu Architects were brought in to design the new offices within the centre.
“We designed the new offices for The Nippon Foundation Paralympic Support Centre ahead of the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games,” says Torafu Architect. “The offices are located in Akasaka, Tokyo inside The Nippon Foundation Building, designed by Junzo Yoshimura, and will provide support for approximately 25 para-sports leagues. As such, we were tasked with providing a space which will promote sports and the extraordinary abilities of Japanese Paralympic athletes.”
From the entrance of the centre, the unique floor pattern resembling a stadium steals the spotlight, echoing the feeling of elation during lively sport events. From the entrance, a 360° screen display provides a simple yet strong anchor from which two diagonal rows of office space are placed.
“Staff can also sit down at the concentric counter surrounding the omnidirectional display to catch a break before returning to the gate-like structures behind them, which act like an information desk for each para-sport league and provides a gradual demarcation between the work space and open space areas,” explains Torafu. “Behind the gates, working spaces are designed in a uniformed manner to foster a sense of unity between the various leagues.”
What’s outstanding is the centre’s graphic emblem which is featured prominently behind a low-rise stage resembling an Olympic podium that serves as platform for delivering speeches during events while offering a perfect spot for athletes in wheelchairs to partake in a photo session.
“We endeavored to create a space where para-sport league representatives, athletes and visitors alike can gather comfortably for the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games,” concludes Torafu.
