Worth The Risk

joy-studio

We all have dreams and aspirations. But sometimes we need to take a chance and make things happen. That’s exactly what Sheikh Azrul did, by opening his very own interior design studio. As a young talented man, Sheikh, 27, decided to change his career as an Architect and pursue something that he loved. Opening his first interior design studio back in June 2014, Joy Design Studio, he soon opened his second studio in Bangsar in February, following the success of his first one. Catching up with the charismatic spirit, Sheikh shares what it’s like transitioning from a practicing architect to running his own successful business here in Malaysia.

Why did you decide to be an architect and what made you decide to change that career path?
Since I was a child, I always had aspirations of becoming an Architect. Architecture is my passion, and when I returned to Malaysia after studying my degree at Glasgow University, I worked in a local architecture firm for nearly two years. My second love is business however. I thought of running an interior design business, providing interior design services and needs. I wanted to do something more with myself and not just stay within a box. So far, this new career change has been satisfying as I’m doing something I love, even though it’s risky.

Was it difficult starting Joy Design Studio?
Starting any business from the ground is not easy. It was difficult of course, especially because at that time Joy Design Studio wasn’t well known. It takes time for a business to grow, but at the beginning because I was doing something I love, the hurdles that I faced simply encouraged me to work harder.

Running your own company, what do you do to make sure everything is successful?
Well, firstly you need to know how to give instructions and also when to be hands-on. The most important thing is the feedback though. Feedback of the whole process, from the design, manufacturing and sale is what helps me to make sure everything is running smoothly.

Do you think the style of your studio reflects you?
When it comes to business, it’s not about me and what I like, but about the market. Personally I prefer something more simple and minimalist, but with this studio, I
conceptualised a mid-century/Scandinavian style as the current trend in Malaysia is more inclined towards medieval designs – designs that a smaller but still elegant.

And do think these concepts are relevant to the society today?
The generation nowadays tend to live in more compact spaces. Everyone of course still wants a perfect home though. I guess that’s why the concept of mid-century/ Scandinavian/minimalist for the market here is ideal.

Since taking on your own business, what’s the most valuable thing you’ve learnt?
Definitely interacting with people. In any business world, including interior design, you have to deal with all kinds of people, so you need to know how to interact with others well. Lack these skills, and you could potentially damage relationships with customers.

Final words?
Don’t stay in your box. Explore and find more.
