All around, there are lush green trees and amazing views on the site where the house of sculptor Jarnuszkiewicz is built. Located within a chiaroscuro coniferous forest, on a vast land overlooking Lake Trousers in Bolton-Est, Canada, this masterpiece of a house is a collaborative work between the client, sculptor Jacek Jarnuszkiewicz and architects Marie-Claude Hamelin and Loukas Yiacouvakis from YH Architecture.
“The project was conceived following the guidelines of the surrealist’s exquisite cadaver where each designer builds upon the work done by the previous one,” say the architects. “Each sculptural proposition was debated until a strong and clear expression of the given landscape’s essence was agreed upon as the core concept of the project. Once the compositional rules were established, the project was developed from the hand of one creator to the other, from volume to plan, from the handling of materials and masses to the upgrowth of interior spaces.”
The result is definitely striking with strong lines and boxy forms taking over the landscape but still blending in with the surroundings.
The open terrace and the house glass features create a vertical composition that is reminiscent of the mature trees surrounding it.”
“The fractioning of masses, the composition of two wood volumes, one light and one dark, the opacity and transparency structural games all make the house unite with nature,” the architects explain. Featuring a natural fluidity of spaces that flow inside out, the open plan of the house forms a continuity between the forest’s ground level and the lower floor of the house, between interior and exterior. At the mezzanine level on the topmost floor, there is a large covered terrace that also functions as a wildlife observation tower and a panoramic belvedere.
“The terrace opens itself to the mountains and overlooks the nearby lake,” the architects share. “The house also brings in daylight and the majestic scenery thanks to the large glass facade covering the three floors. This creates a vertical composition that is reminiscent of the mature trees surrounding it.”
