id Commerical: Pocket Square Design Team

At first impression, there seems to be many squares in Chequers, a chic waffle place at Taman Tun Dr. Ismail. But why not? After all it serves waffles and what’s a waffle without the squares? Literal applications are not always fail-proof, but interior designer firm Pocket Square has successfully used it to this restaurant’s advantage, without going overboard.

For starters, simplicity is an essential element. This means, the entire canvas is kept modest before the waffle-inspired translations come in. A neutral palette of black, white and wood tones set the stage followed by dark outlines in the form of grille work, metal chairs and subtle grooves. Then the fun begins – in the form of chequered flooring and even a waffle ceiling detail over the main counter.

To prevent boxy elements from overwhelming the space, the central spiral stairway provides just the right dose of curves to balance the squarish forms we see throughout the space.

The waffle-like ceiling detail hides lighting points and even fan outlets, giving the space a streamlined look. Red upholstery adds in a delightful touch to the overall setting.
