Style With Substance
Style is the first element you’d need to figure out – this will allow you to springboard more accurately into the type of furniture, colour palette and soft furnishing options for your dream home. Often, a moodboard will help lead the way towards your overall home style.

“The thing with style is – there’s no interior style that is set in stone,” says Abbey. “Even if it’s contemporary or country, those are just starting points. I like to use style knowledge to come up with a decorating direction – but after that, I would always come back to what works for my client.”

While generic styles may offer cookie-cutter formulas, it’s important to infuse your personality into them. For example, if you are going for a vintage look, let that guide your shopping expeditions but in the end, only get and include items that truly mean something to you.

Once you know the style you’d be going for, it’s time to bring in colours, textures and materials. Nowadays to make things easier, many paint brands provide online colour assistance that lets you view how your chosen palette would look like so you won’t make the wrong colour choice.

“Colours play an important role in setting the right mood and ambience,” says Jack, an interior designer based in Kuala Lumpur. “To get the palette right, you’d also have to look into the composition of materials. For example, does wood go well with a red palette or perhaps sticking to white is a better option?” Jack adds that when you know which colours and style to go for, everything comes easily into place which makes shopping for the right elements that much easier.

Before you start putting in the fittings and tilework into your kitchens and bathrooms, it’s ideal to prep the layout first. Kitchens should have a good layout as it affects your productivity and efficiency in this space. Think about how you cook and whether you do a lot of your daily tasks in the kitchen. Will you need a breakfast nook or a smaller dining table in here for informal meals?

For the bathroom, safety comes first, so go for tiles that are non-slip and install quality fittings that are long lasting. There are also many cool accessories that make bathing spaces a wonderful spa sanctuary at home.

For those blessed with children, rooms need to be configured differently from adults’. This is because there are different ergonomic dimensions to consider as well as age-appropriate colour palettes and fittings.

“Invest in quality furniture that can grow with your little ones,” says Linda, mother of four children who has been decorating her kids’ room since they were toddlers. “My kids are all now in their teens, and they are still using the same wardrobe and custom-made study areas. I saved a lot of money as I don’t need to change many things in their rooms as they grow older.”

Finally, when the rooms inside have been elegantly done up, let’s move outdoors and create elegant spaces for entertaining and relaxing with friends and family. Whether you have a garden, a pool or a small balcony, there are still many creative ways to decorate
these areas.

When you attend to different parts of your home one by one, it gets less daunting. What you love, what you enjoy, what makes you feel good – factor all these in when you design and decorate your homes. We hope that this mini dream home guide will help alleviate any decorating stresses you may have and give you a good start in setting up your haven on earth
