From engaging talks to inspiring showcases, the Singapore Design Week 2017 held in March gave design aficionados plenty to take home with them.

This year, the 4th edition of Singapore Design Week (SDW) showcased over 100 local and international events and programmes. Held from 3 to 12 March 2017 at the National Design Centre and various locations across Singapore, visitors were treated to an in-depth look at the progressive works of local and international designers. The design week’s organiser, DesignSingapore Council (Dsg) also celebrated another momentous occasion: their collaboration with Time Inc., a US mass media conglomerate.

“SDW is very different from the other design festivals, in that our narrative of design has broadened over the years, and this has been demonstrated through our programming,” said Ms Agnes Kwek, Executive Director, DesignSingapore Council. “At the same time, we are excited to see the creative and craftsmanship of local designers grow from strength to strength every year, and grateful that they see SDW as a key platform to showcase their work. We are especially thrilled to announce our new collaboration with global media company Time Inc. for the Innovation by Design Conference. The collaboration enhances Singapore as a global city for design.”

Event Highlights
Innovation by Design Conference
Thanks to the collaboration between Dsg and Time Inc, their Fortune, Time and Wallpaper magazine brands were a prominent presence at the conference, themed “Design. Innovate. Transform.” Designers and business executives attended the event, where its discussion topics includex design and technology, and how design can transform businesses.

SingaPlural
This SDW event was held at the F1 Pit Building. Curated by award-winning design firm, BLACK, the festival’s theme was titled “Stories – A New Perspective” and it showcased fresh story-led installations by UNIQLO, forest&whale, Kinetic Singapore, The Alchemists, National University of Singapore, Scene Shang, Supermama along with many more designers and brands. Divided into different programmes like Projects, Platform and Pop-up, the works on display were fascinating.

International Furniture Fair Singapore 2017 (IFFS)
IFFS is Asia’s premier sourcing and design-led furniture trade show. We were impressed by the array of new design concepts and home furniture pieces that were featured here. We also experienced various furniture sets in the virtual reality realm via Dimension 5’s VR technology. Besides highlighting the works of talented designers from around the world, renowned artists such as Nathan Yong and Giulio Cappellini also gave enlightening speeches at its opening ceremony. IFFS was co-located with Nook Asia and held in conjunction with the 34th ASEAN Furniture Show at the Singapore EXPO.

Singapore + Wallpaper* Handmade Classics
With “MultipliCITY” as its theme, this curated exhibition consisted of original, one-off pieces and designer collaborations commissioned by Wallpaper* magazine. Located at Gillman Barracks, the exhibition is currently featuring works by Michael Elmgreen; Chris Hill; Beatrix Ong (in a partnership with furniture collective Joined + Jointed); Christian Haas; glassmaker Theresienthal; French Armagnac house Marquis de Montesquiou; a team-up between Neri & Hu and Jaguar; Nose Geza Schoen together with publisher Lagerfeld, Steidl, Druckerei Verlag; as well as Sam Hecht and Kim Colin’s Future Facility design firm, which collaborated with Braun Oral-B to produce a distinctive project.

Frontliners in Action: Architects and the People Create a Better Living Environment
This collective exhibition consisted of events such as Space to Imagine; Room for Everyone (which is commissioned by Dsg and curated by NUS); Limit/Limitless by MKPL; and Living Shelter by WY-TO and Pod Structures. The events show how “frontliners’ like architects find solutions to overcome natural and man-made space as well as resource constraints in their work. This event is being held at the National Design Centre Atrium.

Design, Make & Craft Fair
This fair was curated by Supermama and In the Wild’s Clara Yee, with the theme “Creating a Better World by Design”. With guidance by Singaporean and Asia-Pacific designers, the visitors were treated to fascinating workshops. The Fair took place at The Plaza on Level 1 of the National Library Building.

Design Trails
This event gave visitors a chance to enjoy a Design Day Out tour to design hotspots around Singapore. It was enjoyable to get an insider’s peek into the spaces and studios of Singapore’s creative community. The talks and demonstrations given by the designers were equally fun.
