Using the Same Fabric

The simplest way to coordinate pillows and curtains is to use the same fabric in both places. If the fabric used in the window treatments is a distinctive and colourful pattern, using the same fabric to make throw pillows will help to unify the room’s colour scheme, particularly if the curtains and pillows are on opposite sides of the room. If the curtain fabric is a solid colour, another option is to use a similar but not identical colour in the pillow fabric. Solid blue curtains, for example, can be coordinated with pillows by using pillow fabric with the same blue hue but of a darker or lighter value.

Complementary Fabrics
Alternatively, pillows and curtains can be coordinated through the use of complementary colours rather than similar colours. Colours that complement one another are starkly different, but the contrast between them creates visual interest. If the curtains are an earthy orange, for example, a deep magenta fabric used on throw pillows can set up vibrant juxtaposition of colours that coordinates well. Using different colours and patterns in the pillows helps to keep the room from looking too staged and uninteresting.

Accent Fabrics

Curtains and pillows can be coordinated with the help of a third element in the room as well. Visually interesting upholstery fabric used on small pieces of furniture in the room, such as chairs or ottomans, will pull the room’s colour palette together when the fabric is also used for pillows, especially if the fabric complements the curtain fabric. Using pillow fabric that complements the upholstery fabric instead of matching it exactly will create an even more complex web of colour connections.
