Jotun: Colour Trends 2017

Every new year is a new start, which brings fresh beginnings and of course new trends. No matter where we look in our everyday lives, trends are everywhere! From the styling of our hair, the latest lip colour craze, the clothes we wear, the next big smartphone and even inside our homes with the décor and furnishings, it’s an inevitable escape.

Across the world, in every industry, there are armies of people figuring out what the people will want – next week, next month, next season, next year and beyond. Just like the fashion, beauty and technology industry, the world of interior is influenced by trends just as much as any other. When it comes to colour trends in the interior industry, Lisbeth Larsen, the Global Colour and Creative Director of the Norwegian paint brand Jotun, is the person we need to know, as she is able to identify those trends and translate them into products that you and I will want and need in our homes.

“My role entails working with global trends, key insights and colours,” Larsen explains. She is responsible for all the new colours that Jotun launches, for the company’s colour cards and colour trend reports and for conducting the research that results in those final products, which she claims is the “best possible job in the world”.

Once a year, Jotun launches its global colour card, which highlights around 24 shades that the company believes best capture the mood of the moment. Handpicked and developed by Larsen and regional colour experts every year, she says the brand mixes in some of their best-selling colours with new and trendy nuances to create an exciting offering.

“Most of the colours we create in our pigment laboratories become iconic. I believe in mixing classic and iconic colours with some new, fresh and trendy ones. The end result is based on key interior trends, current fashion insights and what will ultimately look great on walls.”

However “on trend” a colour might be, if it doesn’t look good on a wall, it’s no use to anyone. As it is, Larsen says people are still wary of colour in their homes, or, more specifically, of experimenting with colour and getting it wrong. Homeowners in general are not too confident about adding colour to their homes for fear that they will ruin the aesthetics of a room. According to Larsen, colour is a brilliant way to change the look and feel of any space. As paint is rather inexpensive, people should really use them to create personalities and beautify their rooms or even completely transform them as often as they like.

“We are all inspired by different things. We travel, physically or online, and discover new places. The food we eat, the books we read and the music we listen to come from all corners of the world. With our new colour card we wish to reflect this curiosity in people’s homes, and we have come up with three themes that capture these tendencies in time” says Larsen.
