As simple as it sound, one of the ways for preventing your home to be heated up is to keep the house closed tight during the day. Don’t let in unwanted heat and humidity, and ventilate at night either naturally or with fans.

If you have an older central air-conditioner, consider replacing the outdoor compressor with a modern, high-efficiency unit. Or if you rather have a new one altogether, just get one that it is properly sized to avoid wasting energy.

For those of us living in a hot and humid climate, make sure that the air conditionaer you buy will adequately get rid of high humidity. Go for models with variable or multi-speed blowers. Also try to keep moisture sources out of the house.
5) Service and maintain

Make it a point to service your air-conditioner from time to time. Clean your air-conditioner’s air filter monthly as normal dust build-up can reduce air flow by 1% per week. Remember, frequently maintained air conditioners can maximize efficiency.
6) Shades and blinds

Install white window shades or blinds, they’ll help reduce solar heat gain by approximately 40-50%. If possible, draw the curtains for south and west-facing windows as they tend to project direct sunlight.
7) Install awnings

If there’s insufficient roof overhang, do consider installing awnings, as they provide the extra shade that you need.
